I would write her a song, because songs dont wait to RESOLVE
When I first read this line it certainly struck me. Of course, it fit right in with its context, but I also took my own understanding of it to a whole new level. In my opinion it is a metaphor for life, not just a line to describe a girls preference.
The original line was taken from the introduction into the story on the founding of To Write Love Oh Her Arms written by Jamie Tworkowski based on the true story of Renee. The tale is a story of this young brave girl Renee who at 19 had suffered immensely; she has felt the sting of a razor blade, known the touch of disgusting men, felt the rush of the cocaine in her system, the blur of alcohol filled nights, and the sleepless nights of a torturing childhood.
Renees story is the story of a girl who was refused help before having to find it within herself, her friends/family, music, and Christ in her case. Jamie asks Renee, What would you do if your story had an audience? and she replies, It would be nice to know that my suffering finally has a reason. Today, two years after Renees recovery, her story is now symbol of hope for all that seek. She is the inspiration behind millions of peoples recovery, and she is living proof that we have the ability to make it out alive when all the odds seem against us.
Jamie states that opposed to writing Renee a book, we would write her a song, because songs mean so much more to her in the end. Stories wait for endings, but songs are brave things bold enough to sing when all they know is darkness. These words, like most words, will be written next to midnight, between hurricane and harbor, as both claim to save her.
From this, came my metaphor. Like Jamie states; stories wait for endings and in my opinion most books all have the same purpose; to have a message or moral expressed by the end of the book. All books have the same basic structure, an introduction, a conflict, series of events, before a climax and then a resolution, and while this may be accurate for teaching the audience a valuable lesson by the end of the book, it is no where near realistic.
Not to say that books neednt have this structure, because in all honesty if there was no set theme or lesson to be learnt by the end of the book it would make the book rather pointless and dull. It is important to keep in mind though that anyone who was to use a book as an analogy for life, they would be in my opinion, incorrect.
If I was looking for something to compare life to, it would of course be a song. There are many reasons, and as for one Ill make reference to Jamie when he states that songs are brave words that no one else dares to speak; this in itself is realistic because we are aware that in modern day society there are certain issues that we choose not to speak about due to our fear of the consequences.
Songs are just like life for the other reason that they are unpredictable. There are no set guidelines for life as there are none for songs. There is no promise that anyone will learn any lesson by the end of the song. Songs are also brutally real and modest; there is no promise that it will have a happy ending or a proper one ending if any. We are not promised that by the end of the song we as the consumer will be satisfied with the outcome result, it is simply the way it goes.
These are the reasons as to why life is a song, and not a book. A song is my metaphor for life because nothing in life is to be expected but death, because it is the only thing in life that we can predict.
